May 27, 2013 marks the second anniversary of the death of Gil Scott-Heron. Not a day has gone by that the family does not miss him and think of him, feel his presence and appreciate the outpouring of love, respect and acknowledgement of his gift from people of all ages and walks of life. We invite you to continue to enjoy the music and understand the deeper meaning in the messages that Gil left us. With a timeless relevance, his words touch the hearts and minds of people around the world.
Since his death in New York City in 2011, Gil has received countless honors and tributes — from places as little known as a college classroom to the internationally-recognized 2012 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. His work remains highly sought-after in the literary, entertainment and advertising worlds.
On April 1, 2013, his birthday, radio stations paid tribute, including WRFG in Atlanta, WPFW in Washington, DC, WURD in Philadelphia, and KPFK in Los Angeles. Early this year, one of Gil’s songs was played at the end of the hit CBS show “Elementary”; and his work has been sampled and covered by a variety of artists.
Producer Charlotte Fox renamed her annual poetry festival in Washington, DC in Gil’s honor last year: the festival will be held at the Carter Baron Amphitheater on August 2013.
